China official manufacturing PMI: September 2026

30 September 2026 (date announced) · macro statistics · confidence: confirmed · status: scheduled · impact 4/5 · EU relevance 5/5

Why it matters

The official PMI is the first monthly read on Chinese factory activity, and China is both the demand side for European machinery, chemicals and autos and the supply side for the clean-tech and electronics inputs Europe depends on. A sub-50 print signals weaker EU export orders and more Chinese overcapacity pushed toward European markets; a strong print firms commodity prices and euro-area imported inflation.

What to watch

Result captured

China's official manufacturing PMI rose to 50.1 in September 2026, up 0.3 points from 49.8 and at or above the 50 mark that separates expansion from contraction. Large, medium and small enterprises came in at 50.6, 49.7 and 48.9. The non-manufacturing business activity index was 50.2. The composite PMI output index was 50.7.

Briefing

China's manufacturing sector has crossed back into expansion territory, signaling a stabilization in demand that will ease near-term fears of deflationary export dumping into European markets but mask persistent weakness in smaller firms and employment.
