Informal meeting of ministers responsible for cohesion policy (Dublin)
Why it matters
Cohesion policy is the EU's main investment instrument for narrowing the gap between richer and poorer regions, and the Commission's proposal for the 2028-34 budget would change how it is delivered: cohesion, farm and home-affairs money merged into a single fund, paid out against one plan per member state that ties investment to reforms. Regions and cities object that routing the money through national plans cuts them out of decisions they currently make. This is the meeting where the ministers who would administer that money say what they think of it, two weeks after their European affairs colleagues met in the same city on the budget as a whole.
What to watch
- Whether ministers back the single national plan or press for guaranteed regional chapters with money attached.
- Any figure or range put on cohesion funding in the next budget, against the current period.
- Whether the split matches the budget split at the informal General Affairs Council on 3-4 September, or cuts across it — net contributors are not automatically the ones who lose from centralising delivery.
