EU ambassadors debriefed on the Beijing trade talks (Coreper II)
Why it matters
The member states’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper II) meet on a Sunday, two days after the Beijing trade talks end, and EU-China trade relations is on the agenda again. This is where governments hear what Šefčovič brought back. The same sitting discusses the draft conclusions for the European Council of 15-16 October, so what ambassadors make of the Beijing result can feed straight into what leaders say about China.
What to watch
- Nothing is decided or published at this meeting. What becomes known will come from press reports of what ambassadors said.
- Whether ambassadors judge the Beijing result good enough to hold off on tougher trade measures.
- Whether China enters the draft European Council conclusions, and in what words.
- How much support there is for the Franco-German call for powers to expel Chinese companies from the single market.
