Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election
Why it matters

The result tests whether the SPD can hold an eastern state at all, and whether Germany’s Russia policy has support where its economic cost is felt most directly.

Outcome
The AfD came first in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election on 20 September 2026 with 38.2% and 32 of 71 seats, up from 16.7% in 2021. The SPD got 35.5% and 29 seats, the Left 6.5% and the Greens 5.7%, with 5 seats each. The CDU fell to 4.9% and dropped out of a state parliament for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic. Turnout was 78.0%. These are the final figures, set by the state election committee on 30 September.
