Saarland state election
Why it matters
Germany’s smallest territorial state, but the only one the SPD governs with an absolute majority, and a steel state on the French border where the EU’s carbon border levy, green-steel subsidies and the loss of the Ford plant are the campaign. It is a direct test of whether an SPD government can hold a heavy-industry electorate through the energy transition.
What to watch
- Whether the SPD keeps its absolute majority or has to form a coalition.
- Steel-industry policy: state and EU support for the Dillingen and Völklingen works and the carbon border levy’s effect on them.
- Same-day read-across with Schleswig-Holstein: an SPD state and a CDU state voting on one evening.
- Saarland casts 3 of the Bundesrat’s 69 votes: whether the new coalition is aligned with, or abstains against, the federal government on consent laws.
