Saxony-Anhalt state election
Why it matters
The first eastern state election since the 2025 federal vote and the one where the AfD went in polling near 40%, so it is the test of whether a far-right party can win a plurality large enough to make government formation without it arithmetically hard. A first AfD-led state government, or a many-party coalition formed only to prevent one, would change Germany’s domestic security narrative, its Bundesrat arithmetic and how Berlin’s partners read its stability.
What to watch
- Whether an AfD plurality can be kept from government, and what coalition of the remaining parties that requires.
- The CDU’s result and whether its refusal to govern with the AfD holds in the state where that line is most tested.
- Signals on Ukraine, Russia sanctions and energy prices from the campaign, and their read-across to the eastern states voting in 2029.
- Saxony-Anhalt casts 4 of the Bundesrat’s 69 votes: whether the new coalition is aligned with, or abstains against, the federal government on consent laws.
Outcome
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 43.8% of the vote with 39 lawmakers in the 83-member parliament, falling three seats short of a majority. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) slumped to 17.2% of the vote and won 15 seats. The centre-left Social Democrats got 9.3%, the Greens 8.9% and the Left Party 8.6%, all winning 8 seats apiece.
